Geboren als Dennis Lee Hopper op 17 mei 1936 in Dodge City, overleden aan kanker op 29 mei 2010 in Venice, Californië. Zijn regiedebuut "Easy Rider" werd genomineerd voor de Gouden Palm en won de prijs voor Beste Eerste Film op het Filmfestival van Cannes. Voor zijn hoofdrol in de televisiefilm "Paris Trout" won hij een Emmy. Hij kreeg Oscar-nominaties voor zijn scenario van "Easy Rider" en voor zijn rol in "Hoosiers". Voor zijn rollen in die laatste film en in David Lynchs "Blue Velvet" kreeg hij tevens een Golden Globe-nominatie. Sinds 26 maart 2010 heeft hij een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame, op 6712 Hollywood Boulevard.
