Voor zowel "Titanic" als "Avatar" kreeg hij drie Oscar-nominaties, voor Beste Film, Beste Regie en Beste Montage. De drie Oscars voor "Titanic" won hij. Voor beide films won hij tevens de Golden Globe voor Beste Regisseur. Sinds 18 december 2009 heeft hij een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame, op 6712 Hollywood Blvd.

Hij is vijf keer getrouwd geweest, met Sharon Williams (1978-1984), filmproducente Gale Anne Hurd (1985-1989), regisseur Kathryn Bigelow (1989-1991), actrice Linda Hamilton (1997-1999) en actrice Suzy Amis (2000-heden).
