Voor zijn hoofdrol in "Murphy’s Romance" (1985) kreeg hij een Oscar-nominatie voor beste acteur. Hij won 3 Golden Globes en twee Emmy’s en heeft sinds 1960 een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame, op 6927 Hollywood Boulevard.
