Ze werd wereldwijd bekend door de populaire politieserie "Cagney & Lacey" (1982-1988), waarin ze vanaf aflevering 7 Christine Cagney speelde (Meg Foster speelde de rol in de eerste 6 afleveringen). Haar tegenspeelster Mary Beth Lacey werd vertolkt door Tyne Daly. Sinds 29 maart 1995 hebben Gless en Daly beide een ster op de Hollywood Walk of Fame, op 7065 Hollywood Boulevard.
