Geboren als Richard Henry Sellers op 8 september 1925 in Southsea, England, overleden aan een hartaanval op 24 juli 1980 in Londen, Engeland. Hij werd 3x genomineerd voor een Oscar, 5x voor een Golden Globe, 1x voor een Emmy en 4x voor een BAFTA (de Britse filmprijs). Hij won de Golden Globe voor "Being There" (1979) en de BAFTA voor "I'm All Right Jack" (1959).

Hij trouwde viermaal, met de Britse toneelactrice Anne Howe (1951–1961), de Zweedse actrice Britt Ekland (1964–1968), het Australische model Miranda Quarry (1970–1974) en de Britse actrice Lynne Frederick (1977-1980).
